VERONIQUE ENGEL

Film Director

ABOUT

"Dad thought he'd nailed it, capturing the end of my Barbie era, dolls stripped of their glam clothes and ponytails. Little did he know, I didn't stop playing—I transformed it. These flawed Barbies sparked true to life stories on paper, weaving odd yet mostly genuine struggles. Secretly, I'd act out these tales with my dolls, recording on my mom's Nokia. That's where my commitment to non-fiction storytelling found its beginning."

Veronique's director vision is characterised by a sincere passion for people and an ability to get under their skin. She prefers filming her subjects closely over longer periods of time in order to find the deeper layer to make the story really personal. Her tightly composed films bring intimacy and authenticity together in a cinematic vision.

In her films, Veronique aims to shed new light on marginalised communities who face damning stigma and prejudice. Her ambition is to tell about, and visualize psychological struggle, in the end hoping to find warmth in places where you least expect it.

Veronique progressed her skills in all aspects of film production with a master's degree in Social Documentary Film at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her background as allround filmmaker allows her to take a hands on approach to directing, and affords her the skills to work in a wide range of environments.

The impact of my films are a reflection of how much access I was given to the lives of the people we portrayed.
